Take Action
Right now, we have a window of opportunity to build a future around reusables in California. The green shoots of a new system are emerging – a system that reuses the same materials and products over and over – maximizing precious resources and reducing harm to people and planet.
Story of Stuff just released a new video, Bring Back Refill: One Bottle, Many Lives, showcasing what’s possible.
Together, we can make this vision happen: California has the opportunity to pave the way, invest in reuse systems and infrastructure, and pass a state policy in the coming years.
Reuse reduces waste, limits microplastic exposure, cuts down on plastic pollution, saves water, creates jobs, and makes refilling the cultural norm.
This is where we need you. Our California state legislators need to see this video. Our lawmakers need to envision a future with reusables, and be inspired to advocate for Bring Back Refill.
Can you send this video to your reps? Take action to share Bring Back Refill with your representatives and urge them to support a reusable beverage policy.
Ready to kick it up a notch to help advocate for the Bring Back Refill vision with us? Then invite your representative to meet about supporting Bring Back Refill in the California legislature. Story of Stuff staffers can help you prep and participate in the call with you. If and when you get a response from your rep, loop in Alex at alex [at] storyofstuff [dot] org.

I’d also really like to discuss this further with you and your staff. Can we schedule a time to do so at your convenience?
We've been showing California lawmakers the growing support for reusables as a waste, climate, and business solution, and now we're educating them on how exactly reuse can work in the state.
We're continuing to work on a California Bring Back Refill bill that would boost reusables in the beverage industry via our bottle bill, thereby tackling plastic pollution and litter, reducing health impacts of microplastics, creating green jobs, holding corporations accountable for their waste and more. With your help, we've already supported laws to improve the bottle bill and takeback convenience, established a statewide grant investing in reuse infrastructure, and published a feasibility report.
The feasibility report from Eunomia & The Story of Stuff Project demonstrated the impacts of moving a quarter of California’s to-go beverages into reusable beverage containers with impressive results:
This is just the start. This is a build year and we need your help — building a grassroots movement demanding a reusable future takes all of us. Together, we'll be laying the foundation so we're ready for a big push next year.
