Global Week of Action:

Plastic Pollution Brand Audit

UPDATE 8/13: We held an informational webinar to share more information about what a brand audit entails and how you can organize one in your community. You can watch that presentation here, or read this post which reviews everything that we discussed. On Wednesday, August 15 we will open up a page where you can register the brand audit that you will organize in your community. In the meantime, you can still sign up on this page to make sure that you are receiving updates about this campaign.

Plastic pollution is turning up everywhere, from the deepest ocean trenches to the arctic ice sheets. There’s a lie at the heart of this problem -- that individual litterbugs are to blame. We need to change the story about who’s really responsible for plastic pollution.

Every year, thousands of people get together to clean up the waste that washes onto beaches around the world – but more plastic always reappears. To break the cycle of plastic pollution, we need to do things another way.

This year, we’re not just cleaning up trash – we’re bringing accountability to the companies that create it. Will you join us for an online conversation about hosting a brand audit in your community? Join our live webinar on Monday, August 13 at 3pm PST (10pm GMT) to learn about hosting a brand audit in your community!

What is a brand audit?

A brand audit is a cleanup with a healthy dose of citizen science! From September 10-15, volunteers around the world will be picking up litter at beaches, parks, and other public spaces. In addition to collecting waste, they’ll be tallying what brands and products show up most often. This data will help The Story of Stuff Project and partner groups identify the companies whose products most often end up in the environment, so we can hold them accountable for their waste.

This is the type of action that keeps CEOs up at night!  But we need a critical mass to come together to make a splash. That’s why we’re asking you to step up to the plate by hosting a brand audit in your community.

How can I get involved?

We're looking for leaders to help coordinate a brand audit in their community! We'll help by providing tools, instructions, and mobilizing other passionate Changemakers near you. You'll be joining a global week of action alongside members of the #breakfreefromplastic movement from San Francisco to Surabaya. This is an important step in our strategy to hold Big Plastic accountable for its plot to trash the planet for profit – but to succeed, we need you to get involved. Join our live webinar on Monday, August 13 at 3pm PST (10pm GMT) or sign up to learn more about hosting a brand audit in your community!

Who's behind this action?

Brand audits are a strategy of #breakfreefromplastic, a global movement envisioning a future free from plastic pollution. Since its launch in September 2016, nearly 1,300 groups from across the world have joined the movement to demand massive reductions in single-use plastics and to push for lasting solutions to the plastic pollution crisis. These organizations share the common values of environmental protection and social justice, which guide their work at the community level and represent a global, unified vision.
