Every year, the United States alone burns or buries in landfill 32 million tons of plastic. 8 million tons of plastic pollution escapes into the world's oceans.
 
The Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act of 2021 will tackle the plastic pollution crisis in the United States. 
 
This legislation seeks to meaningfully address the plastic pollution crisis by:

- Shifting responsibility for waste management and recycling to manufacturers and producers,
- Setting up a national beverage container deposit refund program,
- Establishing minimum recycled content standards, 
- Phasing out certain single-use plastic products that aren’t recyclable,
- Prohibiting plastic waste from being exported to developing countries,
- Placing a pause on new plastic facilities until the EPA updates and creates important environmental and health regulations on those facilities. 
- Requiring language access for limited English proficient communities impacted by plastic pollution can receive the information they need in the language they better understand.

The Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act is a comprehensive federal bill addressing the root causes of the plastic pollution crisis.

For years legislators have sought to fix plastic pollution by making tweaks to recycling to little effect. Now the #BreakFreeFromPlastic movement has developed a comprehensive bill regulating plastics from the moment oil and gas leaves the wellhead through to ending the dumping of our waste on Global South countries.

The bill would ban waste exports, pause the massive build-out of new plastic factories, establish a 'polluter pays' principle to waste management, and would ban some of the worst offending single-use plastics products, among other measures.

The bill will face fierce resistance from industry lobbyists in Washington DC in the months ahead, that’s why we need to build support for the legislation by having as many Members of Congress endorse the bill as possible.
