I'm urging you to support HB 7294, which would bring Connecticut's bottle bill into the 21st century by raising the deposit fee and expanding the scope of the system in line with the massive increase in beverages sold today. This program has already prevented millions of bottles polluting our state, resulting in huge reductions in carbon emissions, clean up costs, and plastic pollution.

We must play our part to reduce the amount of plastic pollution from entering our waterways and roadsides, and container deposits across the world have proven that they are a successful approach to achieving this. Container deposits work by diverting bottles into a closed-loop recycling system before they get into our environment. They’ve already helped recycle billions of bottles from over 40 jurisdictions worldwide, including in Connecticut.

Our bottle bill is only as successful as its scope allows, that's why I support expanding the bill to include the range of beverages we find on our shelves in 2019 that didn't exist when the bill first came into effect. This step alone would add 315 million more cans and bottles to the program, reducing pollution, increasing recycling and reducing clean up costs in the state by an estimated $200,000.

Please support the proposal to upgrade our bottle deposit system and make it even more successful at preventing plastic from polluting our state and fueling the ocean plastic crisis.

Connecticut's bottle bill has prevented millions of plastic bottles polluting the state but it wasn't designed to include the explosion of beverages sold in plastic bottles on our shelves in 2019. Now many of those new beverage bottles are contributing to the plastic reaching crisis levels in our oceans.

Updating the system should be a formality, but the beverage industry is using the opportunity to undermine the move. Right now legislators are only hearing from industry lobbyists, so we need Conneticutters to speak up loud and clear!
