Support the DC Bottle Bill

Tired of the litter in your neighborhood, and all the bottles and cans polluting local waterways? We are too. That's why we're rallying for a Bottle Bill in DC, and we need your help!

A bottle bill reduces plastic pollution, tackles litter, limits the harmful health impacts of microplastics, saves taxpayer money, holds polluting corporations accountable, invests in reuse systems and more -- all by putting a 10¢ "deposit" on bottles and cans to incentivize their return for recycling.

But lobbyists for the American Beverage Association, who represent beverage industry giants like Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Co, are doing their best to block the effort.

Message DC councilmembers and urge them to vote YES on the Bottle Bill! They need to hear from you. Plus, personalize your message and share why this issue matters to you.

Bottle Bills:

  • Reduce single-use plastic, plastic pollution, and litter by plastic a 10¢ deposit on bottles and cans, creating a financial incentive for them to be returned for recycling. Recent clean up efforts along the Anacostia River have shown that as much as 60% of the trash is made up by plastic bottles alone.
  • Limit the harmful health impacts of microplastics. By reducing the plastic bottles that are polluting our water, land, air and ecosystems, we reduce the microplastics entering our bodies as well.

  • Save taxpayer money and hold polluting corporations accountable by putting the rising cost of litter clean up and waste management onto the industry that creates the problem, rather than DC residents.

  • Invest in reuse systems by creating the circular return infrastructure needed to make them possible.

Washington DC has an opportunity to pass the first new bottle bill in the U.S. in over 20 years. While ten states passed bottle bills at the end of the 20th century, the lobbying arm for the beverage industry alongside waste haulers and retailers have been working to block state bottle bills from spreading across the country, in spite of their success and popularity.

The Anacostia River, now littered by bottles and cans, running through the heart of Washington DC is a testament to the problem. The Otter population, an Apex species in the River, has been badly affected by eating microplastic and chemical pollutants that have been absorbed by their prey.

Bottles bills and deposits place a financial incentive on customers to return the beverage containers, and are a proven intervention to waste and litter. Nearby Connecticut is now recycling around 90% of the beverage containers it sells.

But the beverage industry is lobbying hard, under the banner of an "Alliance for an Affordable DC", and bombarding councilmembers with questionable cost-of-living claims despite the fact that studies have shown that bottle bills don’t raise the price of beverages. The truth is that the beverage industry doesn't want to be the one footing the bill to clean up their pollution.
