Bottled water companies are helping to drain California dry

    Peter Brabeck

Over half of California is experiencing a stage D4 "exceptional" drought. Lakes are drying up, cities are instituting water rationing and no relief is in sight.

California citizens are facing mandatory water restrictions, but bottled water corporations are operating at full volume. Coke, Pepsi and Nestlé are pumping out millions of gallons from locations in the heart of the state's disaster-level drought. Companies then ship the water out of state, or sell Californians back their own tap water for up to 2,000 times its cost. Worse, the companies actually waste nearly as much water as they bottle and sell-- using 1.67 liters of water to process and make a one-liter bottle.

In a period where the state is drying up, California can hardly afford to waste water -- so why are we letting companies make millions of dollars exporting water from a federal drought disaster areas? As we experience record weather and try to survive on a warming planet, we all need to pitch in and do our part. Tell Coke, Pepsi and Nestlé to stop bottling water during California's drought today.
